Vineyard Notes

57% Thompson (Los Alamos Valley) and 43% Vogelzang (Happy Canyon, Santa Ynez Valley). Thompson Vineyard is a moderately cool site located in the Los Alamos Valley where the coastal influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean produces cool days and nights. Vogelzang Vineyard, located in the Happy Canyon AVA of eastern Santa Ynez Valley, enjoys a relatively warm microclimate due to its inland position. The warm days are tempered by late afternoon marine breezes, ensuring excellent development of aromas and flavors. Grenache grapes for our rosé were harvested at a lower brix to ensure a lively and refreshing wine.

Production Notes

Abundant winter rainfall in 2017 helped ease a five-year drought in California, replenishing soils and leaching out any accumulated salts. Mild spring weather averted any frost issues, and set the stage for excellent bloom and set. A heat spike in early September sent grape sugars soaring toward ripeness and vintners hastened the pace to keep up. Cool temperatures quickly returned, and remained cool for the rest of the harvest season. Yields ranged from average to up to 50% below average, resulting in excellent concentration and intensity in the fruit

Winemaker Notes

Grenache clusters for this wine were channeled direct to press where limited contact with the grape skins rendered its beautiful pale rose color. After being pressed off the skins, the juice was transferred to a stainless steel tank for fermentation and aging. The neutral nature of the stainless steel served to safeguard the fresh aromatics and expressive flavors of the fruit. The wine was bottled on December 6, 2017.
