VINTNERS SPRING WEEKEND BRINGS TWO NEW PINOT NOIRS
Now in its 33rd year, the Santa Barbara Vintners Spring Weekend is the flagship wine event in our region, and perhaps our favorite celebration of the year. The centerpiece, of course, is the Vintners’ Festival Grand Tasting on Saturday, April 25 at River View Park in Buellton. Santa Barbara Vintners will be pouring their wines, accompanied by scrumptious food from some of the area’s top chefs. I will be there and hope you will be too! Tickets are still available. What better way to celebrate Vintners Spring Weekend than with the release of two new Ken Brown Pinot Noirs—especially when one is the 2012 Clos Pepe Pinot Noir? This vintage is the real deal, classic Clos Pepe aromas and flavors with incredible richness and complexity. Only 228 cases produced, and as you know, it usually doesn’t last long. We also are pleased to introduce our new 2013 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir, a bright, aromatic wine that is drinking beautifully. Try it with oak-grilled pork tenderloin or mushroom crêpes.

This wine truly delivers the exquisite richness, aromatic intensity and alluring flavor profile of classic Clos Pepe Vineyard Pinot Noir. The famed Sta. Rita Hills vineyard is farmed with meticulous attention to detail. The block sourced for Ken Brown Pinot Noir is planted to the Pommard clone. Aromas of black cherry and black raspberry are complemented by nuances of fresh earth, rose petals and a seashell-like minerality. Opulent flavors gracefully greet the palate with hints of dark berry, white pepper and a quiet background of lightly toasted French oak. Vividly aromatic and well balanced, this wine is a testament to the ideal Pinot Noir growing conditions found in the cool Santa Maria Valley. Sourced from the Nielson Vineyard, the vines are planted on a gentle slope in high-density spacing to Dijon clone 114. Bright aromas of deep red cherry and ripe berry are accented by hints of fresh earth and nutmeg. The fresh aromatics give way to vibrant Pinot Noir fruit flavors of ripe Ranier cherries with a touch of French oak and cherry cola. The wine’s soft tannins and rich structure are beautifully balanced by the right touch of natural acidity. A richly textured mouthfeel leads to an elegant, pleasing finish. Only 246 cases made. The Ken Brown Wines team hit the road again last week, this time touring the scenic vineyards of Sta. Rita Hills where most of our Pinot Noirs are grown. Ken led our group through Rio Vista, La Encantada, Radian, Zotovich and Rita’s Crown vineyards, where we experienced the brisk winds and tender bright green shoots of spring.
