Deborah and I would like to thank everyone who came by the winery or stopped to see us at the recent Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Festival. What a great weekend! We’d especially like to thank our Wine Club members who joined us for our first ever Wine Club event at the Avant Tapas and Wine Bar. We enjoyed spending time with everyone, and hope you enjoyed our new releases as well as the scrumptious tapas from Avant. If you have any feedback for future Wine Club events, please let us know.
The spring weather in Santa Barbara County has given us plenty to talk about as we begin the 2011 growing season. Most notably, the region has received copious amounts of rain, which has replenished the water table and will encourage strong vine growth. The average rainfall across Santa Barbara County was 150% of normal. In early April, sustained cold temperatures overnight resulted in frost damage in several Sta. Rita Hills vineyards. Yields will likely be lower in these vineyards.
Deborah and I are excited to offer the 2008 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir as a special pre-release for our mailing list subscribers. This wine stands out as one of the most lush and delicious Pinot Noirs to date, which is a reflection of the beautiful richness and dimension of Pinot Noirs from the 2008 vintage. This wine is a classic expression of Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir, blending fruit from Rio Vista Vineyard (68%) in the slightly warmer east end of the appellation with grapes from Rancho La Viña (32%) situated at the cooler west end. Richly extracted aromas of dark cherry and black raspberry are accented by hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and subtle earth tones. Dark cherry flavors mingle with a touch of vanilla bean and new French oak.
