2014 RITA'S CROWN VINEYARD CHARDONNAY

This stunning Chardonnay hails from the upper elevations of Sta. Rita Hills where the windy, foggy conditions and lean soils of Rita's Crown Vineyard are ideal for growing premium quality Chardonnay. Expressive aromas of white nectarine and crisp Asian pear are accented by hints of honey, seashell, cardamom and a touch of marzipan. The palette features enticing flavors of green apple, honeysuckle, peach nectar and a subtle aged cheddar component. The rich, viscous texture is harmoniously intertwined with a crisp acid profile. The silkiness and complexity of the wine carry through to an opulent, yet bright finish. This Chardonnay will continue to develop, becoming even more complex with additional bottle age. HOW IS THIS YEAR'S VINTAGE SHAPING UP?

Despite receiving lower rainfall than expected during this El Nino winter, vineyards in Santa Barbara County are looking very good, even "textbook" according to Ken. While the quantity of rain was disappointing, the timing was perfect. Most of the precipitation occurred January through March, allowing flowering and set to occur without the threat of damage that late season rains can bring. The canopy to fruit ratio looks to be very balanced. The canopy vigor, number of shoots and leaf morphology are excellent and well positioned to support the fruit through full maturation. Crop size is moderate and berry size is medium-small. A few vineyards in the region experienced mild mildew pressure, but our vineyards have remained healthy.
