BEAT THE WINTER BLAHS WITH TWO NEW REDS!

2014 SANTA BARBARA COUNTY PINOT NOIR
This wine showcases some of the finest Pinot Noir vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of Santa Barbara County: 49% Rio Vista, 17% Radian, 11% Rita’s Crown, 10% La Fond, 7% Buona Terra and 6% La Encantada. Charming and bright, the wine features aromas of mixed berries, cranberry and deep cherry accented by a touch of baking spices and subtle earth tones. On the palate, a solid core of rich Pinot Noir expression is surrounded by hints of blackberry, tart cherry and spice. Well-balanced, velvety tannins give way to a bright, appealing finish. Additional bottle age will promote even more depth and complexity. More info here.

2014 "A" CUVÉE SYRAH
Ken’s signature “A” Cuvee Syrah expertly blends warmer climate Syrah from McGinley Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley (50%) with cooler climate Syrah from Watch Hill Vineyard (30%) and Thompson Vineyard (20%), both in Los Alamos Valley. The result is a superbly integrated and balanced wine. Rich aromatics of Santa Rosa plum, blackberry and currant mingle with a hint of earthiness, pink peppercorn and violets. Vibrant flavors of dark plum accented by subtle notes of roasted meat and anise are enveloped in a rich, luscious mouthfeel. The velvety tannins and layers of complexity will only be enhanced with additional time in the cellar. More info here.

RAIN, GLORIOUS RAIN

California residents aren't the only ones elated to see the substanial rain we've been receiving this winter. Our drought weary grapevines are welcoming the moisture! "This is the perfect time of year to receive this kind of precipitation," says Ken. "The vines are dormant, so no risk to leaves or grape clusters. The rain is filling the soil profile with water naturally, readying the vines for spring growth." The winter rains also help leach salts out of the soil, which can accumulate over time, especially with the use of well water for drip or overhead irrigation relied on more heavily during periods of drought. As of last week, Buellton's rainfall total was 139% of normal, with almost seven inches falling in January alone.
